Food is very very very important in the Colombian culture. The people in Colombia are proud of their food and their different dishes. There are some national dishes but also many regional specialty dishes. And Colombians love fruits. There are so many fruits in Colombia! I was amazed, I had not heard of many of the fruits commonly found in Colombia.
Breakfast in Colombia
Breakfast in Colombia usually consists of arepas with cheese or egg, fruits and black coffee (“tinto”) or hot chocolate. Arepas are flat rounds made of corn flour and water and baked without using oil. Hot chocolate can be made with milk but is usually just made with water.
Lunch in Colombia
Lunch is the biggest meal in Colombia. Everyone is looking forward to lunch. There are many dishes to choose from. Commonly the lunch dishes have both rice and beans. Also fried plantain (“platanos”) are common. Then chicken, pork or fish and a tiny salad if any. Then there are the different soup dishes like “ajiaco” and “sancocho” and the famous dishes like “bandeja paisa” and “cassuela”. Lunch is eating around 2 or 3 o’clock.
Diner in Colombia
Diner is small in Colombia. It can be just some small fried empanada filled with meat or cheese, another arepa with cheese or a serving of platanos with sauce. Dinner is eaten around 8 or 9 o’clock, there is not a strong custom like for lunch.
